            CHICACABRA RELOADED

A Telenovela on Crack

By Yoly Solis

Based on the Novel CHICACABRA

Snorting tears echo inside Manny’s moonlit office. A  gooey, tar-like
mascara clump lands on Gisela’s handkerchief. Regardless, mascara
             still clings to her lashes.

Gisela stands at the desk, blows her nose…

                                      GISELA
                           I’m such an idiota!

             Manny stands next to her…

                                      MANNY
You trusted the one you love.
                           I’ve been there, too.

                                      GISELA
                           You have?

             Nod.

                                      GISELA
Oh, Manny, I’m so sorry. I’ve
been going on and on about me,
                           and you–

                                      MANNY
                           History. Don’t worry about it.

             Pause…

                                      GISELA
                           I can’t imagine your pain.

             He looks away.

                                      GISELA
How do you do it? How do you
                           cope?

                                      MANNY
I was in church one day…and
                           saw an angel.

                                      GISELA
                           Your Guardian Angel? You saw
                           her?

                                      MANNY
All I know is that she’s an
                           angel.

                                      GISELA
                           Ay, that’s so beautiful. I
think my Guardian Angel is on
                           lunch break.

                                      MANNY
                           She doesn’t know I exist.

                                      GISELA
                           Don’t angels see everything?

             Manny scoots in closer…

                                      MANNY
                           Not this angel.

             A moment, then…Gisela pulls away, paces…

                                      GISELA
                           I’m sorry about your wife.

                                      MANNY
                           Thanks.

                                      GISELA
Is it okay if I ask what
                           happened?

                                      MANNY
                           I lost her.

                                      GISELA
                           In the accident.

                                      MANNY
                           Actually, long before then.

             Gisela sits, waits…

                                      MANNY
She wasn’t alone in that car
                           wreck. She was with…her lover.

             Gasp!

                                      MANNY
                           So you see, Gisela…I know
                           betrayal.

She shoots out of her seat…

                                      GISELA
                           I’m so sorry, Manny.

He grabs her hand…she covers his hand with hers.

                                      GISELA
                           I’m so, so…sorry.

             Manny moves in closer…

                                      MANNY
                           I’m sorry, too.

             Their faces are centimeters apart.

                                      GISELA
                           It’s a terrible, horrible
                           tragedy.

                                      MANNY
                           More than you’ll ever know.

Their breaths deepen, rhythmically tuned, each breath
intensifies, grows powerful…the force of a wind tunnel…

             Their hair blows wildly…

             Their lips touch.

             Suddenly, Gisela pulls away…

                                      GISELA
                                (out of breath)
                           No…no, I can’t…I’m a
                           married woman.

                                      MANNY
                                (also out of breath)
                           Yes, but you’re my angel.

He wraps her in his arms…

They topple on the desk–files fly in the air…

             KNOCK, KNOCK…

                                      TIA MARGARITA
                           Gisela…you in there?

                                                      **

Gisela kneels inside the confessional…Padre’s shadow
             glows behind the screen divide.

Padre Roberto reads a paperback: “Exorcism for Dummies”

                                      GISELA
Bless me, Padre, for I have
                           sinned.

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
                           You are sinning by saying
                           you’ve sinned when you haven’t.

                                      GISELA
But I have, Padre. I have!

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
Let me guess…one of the big
                           ten, verdad?

                                      GISELA
I…I don’t know how to say it.

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
                           Just because the commandments
                           don’t say anything about lying
                           inside a confessional, doesn’t
                           mean it isn’t a sin.

                                      GISELA
                           Really, Padre,
                           I…I…committed…

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
                           Go ahead, make my day.

                                      GISELA
                           I committed adultery, Padre.
Give me my penance for I am
                           unworthy.

             Pause…

                                      GISELA
                           Padre? Are you there?

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
Did Father Mulrooney put you up
                           to this?

                                      GISELA
No Padre, I almost slept with
                           Manny.

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
                           Almost?

                                      GISELA
                           Tia Margarita showed up;
                           otherwise…

                                      PADRE ROBERTO
Almost doesn’t cut it. You have
to commit a sin to confess.

                                      GISELA
But Padre, in my heart, I’ve been
unfaithful to both my husband and
                           to the sanctity of…

Padre digs inside his pocket, whips out an aspirin bottle,
chugs a few in his mouth…washes it down with a silver
             flask.

                                                               **
             SOMEWHERE IN HIALEAH…

Cluttered, industrial warehouse stuffed with engine parts.
Roll-up doors padlocked from the inside.

A limp shape, wrapped in a blanket, a black hood over its
head, sits strapped to a chair. Beneath the blanket, white,
             orthopedic shoes peek out.

Uni-Brow CHICO sits across from the body, sucks on his gold
             tooth.

                                      UNI-BROW CHICO
                           I didn’t know she was a hundred
                           years old, mang.

Scarface Wannabe paces the dusty, oil-slicked floor.

                                      SCARFACE WANNABE
It was a nursing home. What did
you expect, mang? Go check her
                           vitals.

                                      UNI-BROW CHICO
                           Her what?

                                      SCARFACE WANNABE
                           See if she’s breathing.

                                      UNI-BROW CHICO
No way, mang. I ain’t touching
                           viejo people skin. It’s all
                           wrinkly and flaky and…

                                      SCARFACE WANNABE
Do it. We got to keep her
                           alive… For now anyway.

                                       **

Inside the “Get Some Llantitas” Restaurant…

The place is packed; the crowd…loud and hungry.

Gisela and Manny sit at a corner table. Gisela wears black
             from head to toe. Again.

             They look into each others eyes. Waitress drops off menus;
             they don’t notice.

                                      GISELA
I thought it best we meet in a
                           public place.

             He nods.

                                      GISELA
We have done a very bad thing.
                           Well, we were about to.

                                      MANNY
                           Yes. A very bad thing.

                                      GISELA
And we can’t do it again.

                                      MANNY
                           Never again.

             He grins.

                                      GISELA
I’m very fond of you, Manny.
                           You’re a wonderful man. But I’m
                           married–I hold these vows
                           sacred.

                                      MANNY
Yes, sacred. You smell so good.

                                      GISELA
You do, too. Really good. And
                           your hair is so soft.

                                      MANNY
Your hair is soft. Your skin
feels like silk. I could caress
                           it all day…all night.

RING, RING, RING…Gisela digs inside her purse, her eyes
             locked with Manny’s…

                                      GISELA
                            Hello?

She shakes her head as if she’s been slapped.

                                      GISELA
                           Ave Maria!

                                      MANNY
                           What’s wrong?

                                      GISELA
                           Abuela has been kidnapped!

To be continued…
